My Illustration Process

Mika's Trip to Nakayama Kingdom_edited_edited.jpg

01

Sketching

I start with planning the general pose and angle of my illustration, as well as how close I want the "camera" to be and how much of the character shows as a result. Then I turn down the opacity and begin the next stage.

02

Detailed Second Sketch

Using the first layer of the project as a base, I map out a more detailed version that I can rely on for lineart, cleaning up the lines and solidifying the proportions. This is usually the first thing clients see to get a basic idea of the final product.

03

Line Art

More detail is brought out of the cleaner sketch at this stage. I prepare to lay out the colors of the illustration and determine how much I want the line art to blend into or stand out within the project. This can primarily be determined by the thickness or color of the lineart, which can be altered during the final stages of the illustration if needed.

05

Backgound Environment

This is where the background - and by extension, the setting - of the character are decided. The colors and composition of this element also help to set the primary light source and where it comes from in stone. From this stage forward is rendering colors, shading and texturing.

04

Base Colors

Elements of character design come into play as the color scheme is solidified with plans for environments and lighting. This is also where color palettes are tested and discussed or evaluated as necessary.
